Last Sunday night Sis. Nelson had a
fireside for all women. She goes everywhere with her husband, Elder Russell M.
Nelson. She spoke about being a holy woman. She asked us just once a
day in some activity we do to act and do as a holy woman would. She
discussed several experiences she has had where women have been holy.
She admitted it is hard to be that way all day long but it doesn't hurt
to think about it and put a little of it into our lives.
Monday
morning was my first day at the new job. It is in the back of the
theater where you go to see the Breath of Life. We repair broken
zippers, torn costumes, and make new things for the show. The first day I
was given the huge sail which is about 750 feet long and I don't know
how wide. It is let down at the end of the show in back of all the
performers. The wind is on it and it flutters as a backdrop. It is
soaked in fire retardant so it doesn't catch fire from all the torches.
They tie the sections in big knots that need repair. You should see
the old sewing machines that we sew on. I will take a picture of one
and let you see it. The rest of that morning I put in new zippers for
the clothes that had been broken. For 2 days Kathy (another lady
missionary) and I have been braiding leaves in to leg warmers. They tie
around the leg below the knee and then are soaked in fire retardant so
they don't catch fire. You see these on the different Polynesian boys as
part of their attire. The good thing about this job is it has
air-conditioning. So does my afternoon job.
We made about 15 of these dresses over sulus for the Tongan girls and
about 15 shirts for the boys. They had a devotional Saturday morning
for the missionaries and for their families. Each village does this
once a year. They share their testimonies and sing for us and feed us
breakfast on Saturday morning.
Denis has been home with a
cold for 2 days. It is so hot that it was really hard for him to work
feeling so rotten. He stayed home with no T.V. and no car. Finally
after 2 days he was going crazy. He cleaned the fans, fixed lunch (yes,
I said fixed lunch) and mailed some letters for me. Kind of had a slow
week.
One of the missionary couples had their 50th wedding
anniversary so about 11 couples got together up at North Shore which is
an outdoor place to eat. It is 1/2 block from our house. We met there
and ate. They left their cars in the parking lot and walked to our
house after for cake and ice-cream. There was 22 people and only about
16 chairs. We had to take turns standing. They all seemed to have a
good time. 2 more couples are preparing to go home. You make a friend
and then you lose them. They couldn't believe our roomy apartment.
Some of them have very small ones. Our is small so you can imagine the
rest of them.
Tomorrow morning before work a bunch of ladies are
meeting at the mission settlement and I am going to show them how to
make the 10 minute runner and the tube pillowcases. A lot of them are
very crafty. Diane, my cousin has e-mailed me today and is coming over
on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. We will meet up and spend some time
together.
This week is also Andrea and mother's birthdays on the 21st.
Andrea will be 29 and I think mom would have been 92 yrs. old. Mom and
Andrea have a special bond together. Maybe because they have the
same birthday. On the 11th we had our 6th month mark for being out on
our mission. Only 1 year left. So long but yet so short! Have a good
week. Love Sherleen
You and dad missed the "hang loose" memo. I'm not sure what it is about that adorable Paula Deen, but I might come to Hawaii just to hang out with her.
ReplyDeleteHi Sherleen! Sounds like a good week! Glad you have a nice air conditioned job now!
